E.G. the Oscar goes to [best actress..] but interest in the film increases as well. I know it's the way the world works currently, but how strange that the (small) publisher has to contribute so much financially at the start for no guaranteed return...Interesting recommendations at the end of the article about submission, process, and judging. But I understand that you charge a fee (cumulatively, from longlist to shortlist to winner) of 40 free copies of the book plus £500 for promotional purposes. However open you say you are to entries, this must exclude many small poetry publishers, or force them to take a gamble they can ill afford. Would you consider a sliding scale of fees?Fiona Moorehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10052038869211775919noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1648230750208763565.post-61804826725456640492015-10-28T08:52:03.110+00:002015-10-28T08:52:03.110+00:00Do you mean on the part of the prize administrator...Do you mean on the part of the prize administrators, John? I think it's more likely to be laziness and lack of imagination in the face of a changing scene. As for the Costa, they are applying the same dire terms to unprofitable poetry that they apply to potentially much better-selling novels, biographies etc. Fiona Moorehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10052038869211775919noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1648230750208763565.post-70919719425846336912015-10-28T07:49:02.851+00:002015-10-28T07:49:02.851+00:00The Dylan Thomas Prize 2016 closes for entries thi...The Dylan Thomas Prize 2016 closes for entries this week www.dylanthomasprize.com Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01316462331916213751noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1648230750208763565.post-24386253591168780542015-10-28T07:45:21.286+00:002015-10-28T07:45:21.286+00:00The International Dylan Thomas Prize encourages en...The International Dylan Thomas Prize encourages entries in all genres from authors under 39 and has always had a strong representation of poets on short and long lists. The prizes that are most open to everyone depend on a huge amount of ACE funding, some of which has been mis-spent (the PBS website is notorious); the prizes funded by private sponsorship (Costa, Dylan Thomas, and if into fiction then the Booker) are exclusive, demanding contributions that are prohibitive to small presses. To write poetry costs zero; to publish it costs a few hundred quid; to enter the prizophere that claims to tell you what's 'best' costs many thousands. It's all a bit silly (the TSE especially). We should be able to sort this a bit better. charleshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16580118367334638930noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1648230750208763565.post-76188415299666450362015-10-26T20:59:55.190+00:002015-10-26T20:59:55.190+00:00Thanks Nellissima.
